teens!aktiv training seminars in Austria

The first JYC training course has been completed in Austria with 20 participants. Local CEF workers Silvia (teacher trainer), Matthias (national director) and Carmen (youth challenge worker) taught the course over 3 weekends.

Carmen writes: "The participants came from 3 countries to Salzburg: Italy, Austria and Germany. We were able to train 20 people who mainly work with church teenagers.
One group really has burden for the teenagers in their church because they saw many young people not coming to church any more. For them it was just the right time for a course like that! Matthias was invited to visit this church in January.
Others started to work with teenagers and were really thankful to get training for their ministry.
The youth workers were really motivated and that also motivated and blessed us as teachers. God really blessed this course.
We and the participants were really happy with the 3 weekend-system."

Thank you to all who gave and who prayed for this project. Pray that these manuals will soon be in the hands of those who are teaching the teens.

Thinking about short-term or full-time service?

We are looking for missionaries to join the teams already serving with CEF in Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal and Spain and to open up new areas. The ministry includes organizing Gospel ministries for children, teacher training as well as direct child evangelism.

For Albania, Belgium, Britain, Hungary, Italy, Moldova, Norway, Serbia and Slovenia we require service personnel to work in the office and administration aspects of the ministry including office managers, administrative assistants, multi-media coordinators and graphic designers. Also missionaries to join the teams already serving with CEF in these countries and to open up new areas.

In Bosnia, Kosovo, Luxembourg and Sweden we need pioneer missionaries to develop children’s ministries and to build a team of nationals to take the Gospel to a generation of boys and girls growing up without Christ.

It’s time to move out of your comfort zone into a totally different climate and culture, and see what God can do through you. You could go to Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Zambia, Guyana, Barbados, Romania, Great Britain, and Ireland. First JYC camp in Armenia

"We held our first ever CEF JYC Sports Camp for 3 days in the village of Peteghni. We had 30 teenagers who came to our evangelistic sports camp. All of our CEF workers and some of the volunteers helped us in this camp. Every junior teen received a copy of the New Testament and a Wonder Devotional Book for them to continue their relationship with God. Please pray for the continued work among the children and the JYC groups. Thanks for being with CEF Armenia with your prayers."

First JYC training course in Lithuania

Sandra Burokaite writes, “We started the first JYC training course in Lithuania this month! We divided the teaching into three weekends... We had 17 students and three instructors: Vika Bortko, Lilita Paozalyte and me. We were a bit nervous how it would pass, and all went really smoothly! The people really need this course and all of them were very thankful that we finally started this course!”
I was involved in training all three of these instructors in courses held in Kilchzimmer and Russia. It is so encouraging to see those who were trained go and train others. 2Tim 2:2

MOMENTUM in Ireland

Many young people today are taking a gap year – be it before they start university, or they have completed their degree and want to see the world before they commence employment, or they are already working and just want to take a year out.

In CEF of Ireland we’re offering a Gap Year Programme – we’ve called it “Momentum”. We want to give young people the opportunity to serve the Lord among the boys and girls, both at home and abroad. We offer them a challenge – to move out of their comfort zone into a totally different climate and culture, to see what God can do through them in a different country. But going overseas is not for everyone – so there’s plenty for them to do in good old Ireland. Why “Momentum”? Simply because we want young people who are already serving the Lord here at home to continue to do so, to keep the momentum going, but to stretch themselves and their faith at the same time. And then to keep on serving the Lord when their gap year is over.

CEF Headquarters in America run a Summer Missions programme and have sent young people to various countries of the world. Because these countries are used having English speaking young people, these are the countries we will offer initially, though as “Momentum” develops we hope to add more to the list. They include Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Zambia Guyana, Barbados Romania, Great Britain, and Ireland. Obviously if a young person can speak another language, other countries open up to him. CEF works in over 159 countries around the world, so hopefully we should be able to work something out!

The young people are responsible for raising all the support necessary for their gap year – both prayer and financial. As part of their year we encourage them to take the Children’s Ministry Leadership Course (CMLC) at Kilchzimmer, both for the training aspect and for the experience of living with those from different countries and cultures.
So far two young people have completed their gap year. Cathy McMath (in photo) spent six months in New Zealand after CMLC, then finished her time in the Mourne area and is now in full time employment. Heather worked in her local North West Ulster Area with Rona Taylor, and has been accepted as a Candidate with CEF and starts Bible College in September.
At present three young people are getting ready for the start of their gap year and the CMLC in the autumn – Ashley Stewart, Jayne Stewart and Alison McConnell. Ashley hopes to spend her time in Dublin and Romania, Jayne in Romania and Alison in Kenya. (At time of writing nothing has been finalised for Alison so please pray everything will be sorted in time for her going out in January.) Pray for these young people, that their gap year will be a time of challenge and blessing for them, and their faith in God will be strengthened as they rely on Him to help them.
“Momentum” is a work in progress, and it will be for a long time yet. Every young person is different, every country is different and matching the young person to the right country is different. Not a lot can be set in stone! So pray that with each application we receive we will be able to meet as closely as possible the desires of the young people.
So if you’re a young person and you’re thinking about taking a year out, why not consider spending it with CEF? It doesn’t matter what country they live in, children all over the world need to hear about the Lord Jesus and their need of Him.
Why not get involved in bringing the good news of the Gospel to them? Taking a gap year will stretch you. It will challenge you. But it will be worth it. Just go for it!

CEF Switzerland gives big plug to JYC

In September I was privileged to speak at the CEF Switzerland 'Freundestag' (workers and friends day). My subject was an introduction to the JYC programme, the benefits of such a ministry and why we in CEF should be involved in this.
The leadership in Switzerland have prayerful set 3 goals for the next 5 years and one of those goals is the establishment and development of a JYC ministry.
The seminar went very well and the response was very positive. It is personally very encouraging for me to see a Western European country giving this ministry such a priority.

Tomek and Monika are the local workers in Silesia, Poland. In their latest prayer letter they share about how they involved junior teens this summer in open air outreach. Those of you who have been to Scottish camp can't fail to spot the similarities in the polish photographs! :)
In October they want to hold their first missions weekend for young people. "We would like to go out into the city to tell others about Christ through tracts, etc... Let's pray for this time, that it would be fruitful in the lives of the participants, as well as the lives of children and adults they meet in the city!"

God Says in Slovak

I am so thankful to Svetlana Duračková (translation), Fantišek Pavelka (layout) and Martina Šimová (editorial proofing) and Jana Kráľová (language correction) for their good work on this. It was great to be able to promote it at the conference and to give a demonstration of one of the lessons.

New possibilities for JYC in Serbia

Extract from Darko Srnka's prayer letter,
"At the beginning of 2009 I had the opportunity to participate and complete a course on working with teenagers. There is a new possibility within Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) in Serbia to have clubs and camps for this special group of kids who need to grow in their faith. This year we plan to organize one camp for teens, and I have privilege to be the director for this camp. For me it is a new area of ministry for which I would like to form a team of workers whose hearts beat for this important work. The need is great because the children we have in clubs and camps today grow up and need the value and ministry of something geared to teenagers. As we move forward with plans for this summer and year, I need the prayerful support of many that this work will proceed and grow to become a viable part in the spiritually maturing process of teenagers in Serbia."
Please pray specifically for wisdom in the formation of a team to work with teens and especially a camp for teenagers.

We in CEF are looking for young people to join us for a short-term missions trip to the Normandy coast of France from 22-29 May 2009!

What will I be doing?
Joining in with other people at the weekend and during the week to hand out Christian literature - mainly in post boxes or give it to people on the street and share your testimony if you know French. Also having good Christian fellowship, enjoying the beautiful scenery of Normandy and have fun and laughter. But obviously be sensitive to God’s voice through His Word and His Spirit’s leading in your heart in what way you can make a difference in many people’s lives who do not know God yet.

Who can join?
Six young people - 18 years of age and older.

How much will it cost?

Young people can click on the little post-it-notes and read about subjects such as, music, drugs and alcohol, friends and family, peer pressure, girls only and boyzone... There is also a guestbook and a monitored discussion area that is passworded. Here the teens can get ask specific questions and recieve answers from the CEF team.

Teens Training der KEB-Karlsruhe in Karlsbad

[English below] Mit 17 Teens (13-17 Jahre) aus 7 verschiedenen Gemeinden haben wir ein TeensTraining Wochenende durchgeführt.
Warum führen wir Kinderstunden durch und warum soll ich dabei helfen, war das erste grundlegende Thema. Darauf aufbauend hatten wir 2 Einheiten zum Thema: "Das Evangelium verstehen und Kindern verkünden". Mit Hilfe des "FlickFlacks" sind wir die Inhalte des Evangeliums durch gegangen und jeder Teen musste als praktische Übung das Evangelium mit dem FlickFlack in seiner Kleingruppe vorführen. Ganz praktische Tipps erhielten die jungen Mitarbeiter durch Bastel- und Spielideen, Vorbereitungshilfen und Tipps aus der Praxis. Auch zum Thema "Disziplin in der Kinderstunde" bekamen die Teens wertvolle Anregungen. Abschluss bildete der gemeinsame Gottesdienst zum Thema "Meine von Gott gegebenen Pfunde erkennen und einbringen" mit einem anschliessenden Segnungsteil.
Es waren viele tiefgehende, geistliche Einheiten zudem Gott seinen Segen schenkte. Wir erlebten eine frohe Zeit und super Gemeinschaft.

For our training weekend we had 17 teenagers from 7 different churches!
“Why do we have Good News Clubs and why should I help?” was our first foundational theme. Building on that we had two classes on “Understanding the Gospel and sharing it with children”. With the help of the Gospel-flipper-flapper we went through the main points of the Gospel. Everyone had to do a practical in a small group using the flipper-flapper. The young workers received many practical tips including craft and game ideas, tips for preparation and basic tips from experience. We also looked at the theme “Discipline in the Good News Club”.
To close we had a little service together with a closing challenge entitled, “Recognizing my God given gifts and using them in His work”.
God really blessed our time together. We also had a lot of fun and super fellowship.

[English below] Wir waren gespannt, auf wie viel Interesse unser Seminar für Teenager-Arbeit stoßen würde.
„Jetzt ist es dran, dieses Seminar anzubieten!“ darin waren wir uns als Ausbilder einig: Unser
Gebetsziel: 12 – 15 Teilnehmer. Als sich dann 26 Teilnehmer aus 12 Orten anmeldeten, waren wir echt überwältigt. Einigen mussten wir sogar absagen: Ausgebucht.
[…] Unser Intensiv-Seminar endet am 7. März. Bitte betet, dass dadurch neue teens!aktiv-Gruppen entstehen. Wir wissen: Das ist bei Gott möglich.

We were excited to see how much interest there would be for our Youth Challenge seminar. “Now is the time to offer this course!” at least we as leaders had agreed it was. Our goal: 12 - 15 participants.
Whenever 26 people from 12 areas signed up, we were totally overwhelmed. We even had to refuse some people: Booked out.

Our course ends on the 7 March. Please pray as a result new youth challenge groups will start. For we know: With God it is possible.

The JYC Instructor' Course at Kilchzimmer has just come to an end. We praise God for the help that He gave to each student and instructor and for the wonderful time of fellowship we enjoyed together.
The course participants came from 10 countries - Germany, Austria, Ireland, Haiti, Israel, Lithuania, the Netherlands, France, Serbia and Norway. The teaching was given in English and translated into German. Please pray for these day people as they go back to their homes countries to reach junior teens and to train others in this ministry.

Polands' young people and the urgency of the task

A few days ago, when we returned home in the evening, we saw an obituary notice on the front door of our block saying, "After the sudden attack of asthma, our 14-year old neighbour Magda died." We knew her from the 5-Day Clubs and Good News Clubs. No one expected that this year will be her last one. This accident reminds us how important it is to reach young people with the Gospel. Despite their young age we cannot be certain how much time they have. Think about the children from your neighbourhood. Have they heard the Good News yet?

Tomek and Monika Walica are serving God with CEF in the Silesia area of Poland. As local workers they are developing a ministry to both children and junior teens. Last year they attended our JYC Instructor Course and have since been involved in training leaders for ministry among junior teens.

"Every Friday evening, we’ve been having our house open for the youth in our neighborhood. Samuel has been leading these Junior Youth Challenge (JYC) meetings. No wonder it’s called “Challenge”, if you’ve worked with youth or have ones of your own, you’ll be nodding your head with agreement. It’s CHALLENGING! We praise the Lord for the youth He’s sending, they come without being reminded, and don’t want to leave. They often ask: “Can’t we do this meeting twice a week?” We are exited about the relationship we are building with these youth. Sometimes they are knocking at our door during the week, and coming in. We want to be a light and example. [...] Often as Sam is teaching, he’s interrupted with discipline problems. Pray for us, to be a light for the lost, and remember the youth with whom we’re sharing the true light, that they would want to follow this light to find the Messiah."

We in CEF are looking for young people to join us for a short-term missions trip to the very north of Norway from 22 June – 6 July 2009!

If you join the team, you will be working alongside local CEF workers and helping them with a camp for Norwegian children and junior teens held in Sjånes, Lebesby.
You will have opportunities to make new friends as you help with the various camp activities: Football, orientation, games, sports, crafts, practical help, taking part in our evening programme.... Other possible ministries would include door-to-door distribution of our specially produced children’s booklet “Meet the King”.

JYC Teachers' Course in Ivalo, Finland - October '08

In October, 17 students from Russia attended a JYC teachers' course in Ivalo, Finland. Ivalo is in Lapland. Students came first to Murmansk in the extreme northwest part of Russia and then traveled by bus to Ivalo in Finland.
Pekka Siitonen, the leader of CEF in Finland, explains how this came about: "We have had many TCE1 and TCE2 courses in Finland for students from Russia. Our CEF worker Elviira Haponen is leading this work. Those Christians from Russia asked last winter for help to teach the Bible to 11-14 olds. Several years ago we had a JYC Instructors' Course in Helsinki. So CEF Finland decided to arrange that course in Finland for students from Russia." The instructors Elviira, Satu, Anja and Ulla all previously attended the Instructors Course in Helsinki. Thanks also to Riitta for being the translator.
It is so encouraging to see this sort of cooperation between countries and to see workers taking the initiative to train others for reaching junior teens.

I have just returned from Kursk, Russia where I was teaching a Youth Challenge Instructors’ Course. The 17 eager students and 5 staff traveled from Latvia, Azerbaijan and from right across the Russian Federation. Two young women even traveled from Vladivostock in the far east of the country (a flight lasting 10 hours). Another came from near the border with Mongolia. One of my co-instructors Tatanya came from Siberia. You may remember that in October 2007 she made the 4 day journey by train to be one of my students in the Ukraine!
It’s so thrilling to know that these students (mostly CEF full-time workers) are now going out across this vast country to train hundreds of people in the work of evangelising and discipling 11–15 year olds.

EURO 2008 Irish Outreach Team

The 2008 UEFA European Football Championship kicks off in Basel on 7 June. We will be there along with a team of 11 from Youth Challenge in Ireland, not just to watch the football but also to distribute thousands of tracts for both children and adults in the German, French and Romanian languages. Pray that as a result many children will join the Bible correspondence course and that many will trust the Lord for salvation. Pray for the team too who will be with us from 6-13 June.

Mayhews getting ready to leave

Last night we had a farewell meal for 6 members of the Kilchzimmer staff who are now moving on to other things. Two of those people are Philippe and Joanne Mayhew (pictured here with their children Laura, Jeremy and Adrian) who led Youth Challenge ministries in Europe from 2001-2007. Philippe and Joanne are moving next month to the outskirts of Paris, where they will commence their new ministry as CEF National Directors for France.
We are so sad to see them leave but know that they must now follow God's leading.
Thanks to you folks for everything! Thanks for your years of ministry. Thanks for all the good advice, the smooth handover of responsibilities and your godly example. May God bless you and use you mightily in your new ministry in France.

This is what we like to see! If you compare the photograph above with the one below you will find 3 people who are in both. Monika and Thomek and Justyna all completed the JYC Instructors Course last Monday and then on Saturday they (already) held their first JYC leaders course in Rybnik, Poland. In the true spirit of 2 Timothy 2:2 they took what they learned from us last week and began to teach it to the 8 other youth workers.

Number of JYC's in Europe is down!

Our annual statistics for the past year have just been complied. The number of JYC's in Europe is down from 345 (2006) to 314 (2007). The number of young people attending JYC's is also down from 4425 (2006) to 4320 (2007)!

We now have 8 countries with 10 or more JYC's! 26 countries with only a very few number of JYCs and 10 countries with no JYC ministry.
